Welcme to IOS island
Ios is a hilly island with cliffs down to the sea on most sides, situated halfway between Naxos and Santorini. Ios is part of the Thira regional unit and a popular tourist destination, which attracts people of all ages and nationalities. It’s well known for its beautiful beaches, vibrant night life, its charming traditional village and its relaxed and easy going life style.
Probably the best known place of historical interest is Homer’s Tomb. Located on the north side of the island in the wild, untouched area known as Plakotos. Ios has many beaches the most popular being Mylopotas, apart from excellent sand and sea, there are a great variety of restaurants and bars open all day and into the night. There is also the pristine bay of Manganari on the south of the island, where swimming in its crystal waters is an experience everyone should try. The bays of Aghia Theodoti and Psathi on the eastern side of the island hold their own charms, while the well organized port beach of Ormos and further over the headland Koumbara are also well worth visiting.
Inside the traditional village of Chora ( no vehicles allowed ) beautifully positioned on a hill overlooking the port, the narrow streets are paved with flagstones and from the church near the summit. A real hidden treasure is the Odysseas Elytis theatre, named after one of Greece’s most famous modern poets and faithfully constructed in the ancient style. The island is said to have 365 churches and chapels, like the days of the year.
